How to prepare a wall before mural painting

A mural lasts longer when the wall is stable before the artwork begins. Dust, loose paint, damp patches, cracks and glossy coatings can all affect adhesion and the final finish, so surface preparation should be treated as part of the artwork rather than a separate cosmetic step.

What to consider before you start

Start by checking for moisture or active seepage, then remove flaking material and repair visible cracks or holes. The wall should be clean, dry and reasonably even. Depending on the existing coating and the mural system, a suitable primer can help create a consistent surface and reduce uneven absorption.

Also plan the working area. Move furniture where possible, protect floors and nearby fittings, confirm ladder or scaffold access for high sections and make sure lighting is adequate. Sharing clear wall photographs before the visit helps the artist identify obvious preparation needs and quote more accurately.
