Canvas size is easiest to judge in relation to the objects already in the room. Above a sofa, console or bed, the artwork should feel visually connected to the furniture instead of floating as a small isolated object. On a completely open feature wall, the available negative space becomes the main reference.
What to consider before you start
For a single canvas, consider both width and orientation. A wide horizontal work often suits furniture-led walls, while a taller canvas can balance narrow wall sections. Multiple canvases should be planned as one overall composition, including the gaps between pieces, rather than as separate sizes.
Mark the proposed outline on the wall with removable tape before ordering or commissioning the artwork. Then view it from the main seating or entry position. Share the wall width, nearby furniture dimensions and a straight-on photograph so the final proportion can be planned with more confidence.
